Did someone say crepes?

by admin on July 8, 2011

Let me just start by saying that I could eat crepes everyday.  Seriously.  It’s a good thing I don’t know of a good crepe joint in Atlanta.  Speaking of, anyone know of a good crepe joint in Atlanta?

Okay, so I may not know of any good crepe places near me…and I may never have made a crepe in my life…and I may never have been to France…but I still feel qualified, by the mere fact of having taste buds, to highly recommend to the world the glorious Le Cafe Crepe, located in downtown Austin, TX.  I was in Austin two weekends in a row and you can absolutely bet that I enjoyed every moment of Le Cafe Crepe both times.

I studied abroad in Italy briefly, and there’s nothing I love more than finding somewhere in the States that takes me back to Rome, giving me this indescribable tingling sensation that only my roommates from that trip could possibly understand.  It’s as close to heaven as I get right now.

Le Cafe Crepe does the same thing, only it’s just a nice little sensation that I’m somewhere in Europe.  I assume France, but I can’t be sure until I’ve been there.

Just look at how cute this is…

Just looking at it makes me want to go in.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE outdoor dining?  European indeed.  Even in Texas.

Then there’s the inside.

Relish this.

Small, cramped, and bustling with orangina in the cooler case?  Perfect.  If only it were aranciata, but that’s a whole different nostalgia for Italy conversation…

And let’s not forget the side wall.

It reminds me of this fantastic little place we found in Florence called the One Shot Stop where they had American license plates hanging all over the wall.  Note: I only call this place fantastic because they gave us free shots of lemoncello; I would not actually recommend wasting coveted time in Italy here.  This place also amused me with its attempt to be American in Italy, just like we so often try to be Italian (or French, Spanish, German, Mexican, Cuban, Chinese, Indian, Greek, this list will really never end…) here in the U.S.  That sounds less interesting in writing that it does in my head.  Sorry.

So onto the more interesting part than just the whims in my mind: FOOD!

This cute little spot has every crepe you can imagine: the sweet crepe, the specialty crepe, the crepe of the day, the savory crepe, the breakfast crepe.  When given the option, I will always go for sweet.  Always.  Until I remember the low blood sugar issue.  Then I will go for savory, followed by just a few tastes of sweet.  And so I did.

The Italian

The Italian

Proscuito, mozzarrella, basil, tomatoes.

Basically, bruschetta with proscuito in crepe form.  Fresh, light, excellent.

The Classic

Sadly, I have no pictures because John really isn’t into this whole photograph the food at the restaurant thing.  And he’s the one who ordered it.  Just like it sounds, this is a very basic, classic crepe, filled with ham, swiss, and mornay sauce.  It’s the mornay sauce that makes it.  For those of you unfamiliar with mornay, it’s amazing.  I had to Google it myself.  Basically, it’s just a sauce made of gruyere (probably my favorite cheese) and parmesan.  Can’t go wrong with that.  I must say, though, that this crepe is much heavier than the Italian.

These are the only savory crepes I’ve tried because the Italian was so good the first time that I had to get it again the second.  But then there’s the sweet crepe.  Ahh the sweet crepe.  My hands-down favorite, even though it’s the only one I’ve tasted, is definitely this.

Chloe’s Crepe

Soft, flaky deliciousness filled with nutella and strawberries and/or bananas.  We just got bananas.  Not sure what we were thinking on that one, but it was still delightful.  No words.

Gooey deliciousness.

Pure joy.

I want one now, please.

Questions for you!

Crepe suggestions in Atlanta?

Also, see my comments about “The Classic.”  If you use “Google” as a verb, do you still capitalize it?

I love the crepes at Cafe Alsace in Decatur. The woman who owns it is from Alsace, France and offers some awesome French and German dishes, as well as fantastic Rieslings from the Alsace region.

There’s a crepe place in Smyrna. I can’t remember what it’s called but I think it’s off S. Cobb Drive or S. Atlanta Drive.
