Rethinking My Running Hatred

by admin on July 26, 2011

Two weeks after “starting” Couch-to-5k, here I am, rethinking my running hatred.  Check out “Runnning is for Crazy People” for a run-down (ha!) on my distaste for running.  After that one post about running, well, I didn’t do it anymore.  It was unintentional, but this little thing happened…

It got HOT!  Really hot.  I’ve never been much of a morning person, but I set alarms for 8am each day, trying to run before the heat came out in full force.  In the morning, I’d convince myself that it really wasn’t going to be that bad later in the day, I’d sleep another hour and a half, and then swear it was too hot to run the rest of the day.

I REALLY dislike treadmills, so I didn’t consider that as an option.  This morning, I finally did it.  I got up at 7:30, somehow blew an hour and a half without realizing it reading blogs, and finally went for my run at 9.  I WILL actually follow C25k, at least until the honeymoon when who knows where my priorities will be…so it looks like getting up early is in the cards more.  And 9 is still half an hour too late.  Hold me accountable!

I learned a good lesson between today and my original post on running: Running isn’t for crazy people; running in the mid-day heat is!  My first run was at about noon, high sun, in 85 degree heat.  It’d been cool outside lately, so I convinced myself it’d be okay.  WRONG.

This was me after my last run.

Miserable lobster Katy.

This was me today.

Still a lobster, but a happy one.

Apparently mornings are worth a lot.  I must get to know them better.

This run was also a lot easier thanks to Lee‘s comment on my last post.  She turned me on to the C25k iphone app, so it let me play my music and told me when to run and walk without my having to keep up with time.  That was really nice.

This was also my first run with the Nathan Rock Band Music Carrier and with my new Auria Exceed earphones that I won in Laura at Sprint to the Table’s giveaway.  It was a good start for both, but I need a few more runs to give full reviews.  Keep an eye out!

Pre-fueled with a protein shake – I just can’t go on an empty stomach or hypoglycemia will strike me down mid-workout.  Then came the post-run snack.

Banana with Sunbutter

Terrible lighting.  I didn’t have my camera, so this was with my phone.  Ew.

But, ah, Sunbutter, my newest love.  It’s like a baseball game in a jar.  From the South, much?

What’s your favorite pre/post workout food?

Good for you getting out there! I’ve been treadmilling it up lately, but I am hoping that once it cools down but before the snow hits I want to get back to hitting the trails. I had no idea there was a C25K app! I am starting the program Oct. 1, I will have to invest in it :)

I think it’s going to be a really good program! And if you’re already running some, you’ll probably find the first week, which is kicking my butt, to be really easy.

So glad you got the earbuds!!!

My fav post-run snack is a spinach protein shake with some form of fruit… bananas, avocado, berries… all of the above… and always cinnamon (good anti-inflammatory!).

Oh, Laura! A spinach protein smoothie is EXACTLY what I wanted after my run yesterday! BUT…in the process of making it, I broke my vitamix. So no smoothies here for a little while. I didn’t even know it was possible to break a vitamix!

Ah! I’m so excited you’re blogging Katy. I haven’t blogged in… well… forever. I blame the thesis. (Well, I blame the thesis for a lot of things.) And I’m super psyched that I’ll have a health buddy in the GCB halls! No “Dissertation-twenty” for us!!
